This side Hustle reflector Q&A presents Mark Hellweg, 42, from Austin in Texas. Hellweg is the founder of two coffee -related businesses: ESPRESSO CIFLEE MACHINE MACHINE manufacturer and the ratio of drops to drops that started and built on the side while running Clive. The answers were modified for length and clarity.

What was your daily work or primary profession when you set up a side noise?
The day launched two submitters: the first was Clive Coffee, which I started in 2008 focusing on Italian espresso machines for American customers looking for beautiful, well -made products. In 2012, I started a ratio as a side shop from Clive and offered the first truly luxury drop coffee machine made of metal, wood and glass.

When did you set up a side noise and where did you find inspiration for it?
LOKE Many entrepreneurs, Tim Ferris’s 4 -hour working week influence. I wanted to use developing technologies to create an exmentive business with a fraction of capital. This included a quick 3D printing of prototypes, a global source of own parts, the appearing tools of electronic trading such as Shopify and very Bootstrapy PR and paid media Campaugns. Although new work four hours a week is not really possible or even desirable (it is a great title to sell a lot of books!), The techniques I have learned in this book helped run Clive and later ratio.

What were some of the first steps you took to get side noise from the country?
Study the market, talk to other players in the industry, clarify your unique view and find out a quick way to get good enough concept (often called a minimum viable product). Take people for coffee or lunch (pay for it!) And ask for entry. Connect with your fans of bleeding who want to be the first customers and see if your idea is resonating. Then find out if you could do this thing (or run the service) Takedby if you encounter the correct volume. It is a chaotic process, but it can turn off if your idea solves the problem people have (maybe the one they didn’t know they had).
Most importantly, look for entry from many people who have more experience than you. Require them humbly for insight and use this invalid information to improve your idea. Don’t just talk to business coaches or people who have an “investment” in their LinkedIn profile. What do your grandmother think? Your father’s friend who left real estate two decades ago? Think creatively about shaping your personal advice advice and never taking people or time for a grant.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in the construction of your side bustle and how did you navigate them?
Opportunities provided by open markets and rapidly changing technologies also bring a challenge to remain before constant changes. What last year (or month) worked great on the prospect of customers on social media will become irrelevant this year. There are also so much potential distractions that could have some value, but are not critical for one key aspect of your project that makes it excel. Whether you are loading into faster, cheaper or better, your idea was simple, clear and focused.

How long did it take you to see, are the income of monthly income? How much did the side noise earn?
I was massively pale by the timing of the opening of Clive because we saw 10 times the income from the early year of September 2008 to October 2008 based on the positive review of the coffee machine we sold at that time. We were one of the few websites offering the product and leaned towards a large photo and copywriting. In our second whole business, we have reached over $ 1 million and used this momentum to introduce our espresso machines called Lucca and then relative coffee machines. We announced the ratio in August 2013 and over the next 16 months we ended up more than $ 600,000 before selling.
What does growth and income looks like now?
Clive and the ratio have enjoyed that they have been consisting of growth since its foundation, although we have to constantly adapt to changes in consumers’ preferences, supplier chain factors (hello, tariffs!) And how we find new customers.
What do you like most about the operation of these businesses?
My brain thrives diversity in relationships, projects, settings, challenges … absolute depression looks like doing the same for 8-10 hours at the table. I love that I could dive into the spring of Deep Eddy’s flexible pool on a random Thursday afternoon. The other side of this is that I often invented my best ideas for products for a Sunday walk. The flexibility provided by small businesses was a huge gift that also allowed my wife and I support the children of the oven.

What is your advice for others who hope to start their own successful side noise or full -time?
If you currently have a job, keep it as long as you work on your idea. I am not saying that I use the company time to build your business, but rather to take the stability of paycheck and find free time through lunch, evenings or weekends to clarify your business idea and test stress. Once you get any initial cash flow, find out if you can destroy your work part -time and eventially, you can jump full -time. Always be honest and have integrity with their compensation, but there is nothing wrong with how you are going when you have a job. You never know – your boss can help you in some way. Good luck to my fellow citizens.
